Outside of regular Wednesday training, 557 offers optional activities to help cadets explore their interests and develop new skills:
Marksmanship Team
Drill Team / Flag Party
Band
Sports and fitness activities
Expedition training (hiking, orienteering, camping)
Community service events
Participation in optional training is an excellent way for cadets to challenge themselves and strengthen teamwork.
The Drill Team offers cadets the chance to develop precision, discipline, and teamwork through advanced drill movements and ceremonial routines. Cadets learn timing, coordination, attention to detail, and the pride of performing as a unified team at parades and competitions.
Flag Party cadets take on one of the most honourable ceremonial roles in the corps. Cadets learn advanced drill, flag protocols, and how to represent the corps and its affiliated regiment with professionalism and respect during formal parades and community events.
The Tri-Service Band brings together cadets from Army, Air, and Sea units to learn music, marching, and performance skills. Whether experienced or brand new to music, cadets receive instruction on instruments, drill, and musical performance, leading to opportunities to play at parades, ceremonies, and public events.
The Marksmanship Team develops discipline, focus, and precision through the principles of safe air rifle handling and competitive shooting. Cadets compete in local and regional competitions, with past cadets representing 557 at the National Cadet Marksmanship Competition in the United Kingdom.
The Cyber Team introduces cadets to the world of cybersecurity through hands-on, problem-solving activities and “capture the flag” style challenges.
Cadets participate in both regional and national cyber competitions, where teams work together to solve timed challenges, earn points, and test their skills against other cadet teams across Canada.
The First Aid Team teaches practical lifesaving skills, emergency response, and preparedness. Cadets learn first aid principles, casualty assessments, bandaging, CPR theory, and scenario-based response. Members often compete in first aid competitions and help promote safety awareness within the corps.
Bruce Trail hikes immerse cadets in outdoor adventure, navigation, and fieldcraft while building endurance and appreciation for Canada’s natural environment. Cadets develop map-and-compass skills, teamwork, and resilience on some of Ontario’s most scenic trails.
The 557 Bhangra Team celebrates cultural expression, teamwork, and physical fitness through energetic traditional dance. Cadets develop rhythm, confidence, coordination, and performance skills while showcasing diversity within the corps at events and parades.
