The Army Cadet Program provides hands-on, progressive training designed to help youth build leadership, confidence, resilience, and practical skills. At 557 Lorne Scots RCACC, cadets participate in weekly training, optional teams, summer courses, and leadership programs that prepare them to succeed both in and out of uniform.
Weekly training takes place on Wednesday nights from 1800 to 2100 during the school year.
Cadets rotate through a variety of subjects such as:
Drill & ceremonial
Leadership and team development
Fieldcraft and survival skills
Navigation and map reading
Marksmanship safety
First aid
Community service and citizenship
Physical fitness
Training follows national standards and builds year-over-year using official Instructional Guides (IGs) and Qualified Standard & Plans (QSPs).
Every star level has its own IGs and QSPs, ensuring training is consistent across Canada and delivered to a nationally approved standard.
Cadets learn the fundamentals: drill, orienteering basics, dress & deportment, citizenship, and teamwork.
Cadets build confidence through intermediate skills such as fieldcraft, map & compass, communication, and leadership basics.
Cadets take on more responsibility and learn how to support lessons, assist instructors, and guide junior cadets.
Gold Star cadets refine leadership abilities, participate in advanced training, mentor younger cadets, and prepare for summer leadership opportunities.
Senior cadets hold senior leadership positions within the corps. Senior cadets may also participate in the Army Cadet Advanced Leadership Program (ALP), where they learn advanced teaching techniques, lesson planning, communication, and leadership theory.
Master Cadets may hold the position of:
Platoon Commanders
Company Sergeant Major, Drill Sergeant Major, Training MWO, Regimental Sergeant Major and more.
Instructors for weekly classes and training exercises
This progression is a key part of what makes the Army Cadet Program unique — cadets learn from each other, supported by adult staff.
